The Art of Storytelling and opening up the Word
I grew up in a home where both of my parents had an active relationship with Jesus and modelled what it means to serve and love others—both inside and outside of the church. From a young age, I gave my life to Jesus, though, like many, I experienced the ups and downs of teenage and young adult life. While Jesus consistently pursued me, it wasn’t until my early thirties that I truly grasped the depth of His love and grace, sparking a deeper hunger to pursue Him wholeheartedly.
This journey led me to dive into the Bible with renewed vigour, and through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I began to gain greater understanding of God’s Word. Over time, I realized that Jesus had been preparing me—through both triumphs and mistakes—to experience His love more deeply and share His truth with others.
My heart in teaching is to reveal God’s character through Scripture and help people engage with His Word in a way that is both understandable and applicable to their daily lives.
My Journey
God’s kindness and faithfulness have shaped my heart
God’s kindness and faithfulness have shaped my heart in profound ways, but there are three key moments in my life that have deeply influenced the way I write and teach His Word. One was as a teenager, when I came across a quote by Abraham Lincoln that said, “I will study and prepare myself, and someday my chance will come.” This quote stirred something in me, though I didn’t fully understand its significance at the time. Later, the Holy Spirit led me to Ezekiel 3:3: “Son of man, feed your belly, and fill your stomach with this scroll that I give you. So I ate, and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness.” This verse connected the dots for me, showing how God was inviting me to invest my time and gifts in studying His Word with greater urgency and focus.
Over the years, I’ve delved deeper into Scripture, gaining fresh insights into God’s character and seeing patterns of truth in the lives of biblical characters. This journey has led me to numerous teaching opportunities where I’ve had the privilege of sharing what I’ve learned with others. Although I never pursued formal theology studies, I’ve immersed myself in a wide range of Christian literature to grow in my understanding of God’s Word.
One of the most significant moments in my development as a teacher came during a women’s equipping event, where God revealed to me that part of my gift of teaching includes the ability to tell stories in a way that people can understand and relate to. This has inspired me to approach both Old and New Testament stories with a focus on their relevance to our lives today. The emotions and choices the biblical characters faced are just as real and relatable as the challenges we face in our own journeys.
If you were to ask me what profession I would have chosen, I’d say it would have been a blend of three careers: as a teacher (because I love explaining concepts in a way that helps people have “a-ha” moments), a lawyer (because I appreciate the logical structure and flow of legal arguments), and an actor (because I love dramatizing stories to make them resonate and bring joy). Through God’s grace, I now get to combine all of these passions in my teaching. I aim to present God’s Word in a way that is logical, relatable, and memorable—while always inviting believers to discover for themselves, the goodness of who God is and how He desires to equip us for this life. My heart in teaching is to reveal God’s character through Scripture and help people engage with His Word in a way that is both understandable and applicable to their daily lives.
